Not Feeling Well? Make the Apple Cider Vinegar Tea with Honey
This last week my family has passed around a cold. It started with my daughter, then everyone else got it. It started with a runny nose, and then a dry cough followed. Yuck. When I start to feel sick there are a few things that I like to do. One of the first things I do to help my body to recover is to make a tea at home. I like to put a few things in there that are good for me and help to taste good as well! I heat up some water on my stovetop and grab a mug from the cupboard. As I am waiting for the water to get warm I put a splash of raw apple cider vinegar in my cup, along with a spoonful of honey and a few drops of Lemon Essential Oil. How does this help?
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar has many health benefits. It can help with heart health, diabetes, and weight loss according to Mercola (2015). It can also help with other symptoms like acid reflux, sinuses, and sore throat. This is good to have when a sore throat and runny nose are coming. When putting the apple cider vinegar in the warm water and drinking it, the vinegar helps to break up the mucus that is building up. It also helps to add beneficial bacteria to your digestive tract. When the bacteria can be balanced again, you will start to feel better. Then, when your throat gets sore, make sure to gargle some of the apple cider vinegar diluted in warm water. This will help a sore throat.
The honey in the tea not only adds a nice sweet flavor, but the honey helps a sore throat as well. It has a property called demulcent in there that puts a protective film over the irritated throat for protection. It also “works just as well as dextromethorphan (an ingredient in over-the-counter medicines) in soothing a cough caused by upper respiratory tract infections, usually among children”. (Mercola, 2017)
Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon gives the tea a better flavor while it supports the immune system. According to the Essential Oils desk reference, it aids in increasing white blood cells and acts as an immune stimulant. This is a great oil to have in your home!
The next time you get a cold coming on, I hope this little remedy helps you to feel better faster!
